An Open Letter to Mayor Newsom:
Dear Mayor Newsom:
Right now life must be pretty good for you. You’re going to get re-elected, you don’t have to go to nasty debates, in fact , you’re the envy of most politicians this year since you’ve got it good.
However, some of your friends are doing something very nasty. And frankly, it’s time for you to use your charm, good will, and your poll numbers to kick some butt, for the rest of us in The City.
I’m talking, of course, about the fact that there’s this Proposition A on the ballot that is a necessary (but imperfect) first step towards moving MUNI out of the downward spiral our good friends at SPUR talked about in their well-researched paper on the subject.
Now, it seems, some friends of yours, notably GAP owner Don Fisher have reneged on a promise not to campaign against Prop. A and are sending out mailers that have flat out LIES in them.
Aside from the fact that once again certain parties have shown why they can’t be trusted, it’s time for you to step up and do what you say you want to do - fix MUNI. You have NOTHING to lose at this point. No one can hurt you. You can do anything you want. Why not use your power and good will to knock out dirty politics, send a message you want to reform MUNI for real, and act locally to fight dirty politics, dirty air, and clean up MUNI?
Those of us who rely on MUNI, and those of us who want clean air, and even those of us who need to drive a car unimpeded by redundant traffic, sure could use a change. Show us that with all the advantages you have, advantages we do not have as mere citizens, that you can stand up to well-financed lies, and stand up for the good citizens and taxpayers of Our Fair City.
Regards,
Greg Dewar
