Welcome!

Welcome to ActLocallySF.org — a forum for the brightest minds and the best ideas to tackle the unfinished business of making San Francisco a city that works for everyone, and a model for the world.

As I look back over the last four years, I am proud that San Franciscans have come together to make our government more effective, our economy stronger, our city more tolerant, and our lives a little easier.

I'm proud that our universal health care plan passed this year. Proud that we stood up for equality for all San Franciscans by supporting gay marriage, that we are becoming the national center for stem cell research and biotechnology, and that we are leveraging our strong economy to promote job training and economic opportunity for those who have been left out of previous economic expansions.

I am proud that we are on our way to becoming the most environmentally sustainable city in America, that we've worked every day to address the homeless crisis and have helped thousands of people transition off the streets.

Despite these accomplishments, I know there is much more to do. That's why I am running for re-election. And that's why I've launched ActLocallySF.org. Because I know the best ideas come from the ground up, not the top down; that a healthy debate about our most pressing challenges is the best way to find lasting solutions; and that the answers to keeping our city great — and making it greater — lie in the minds of all San Franciscans, not just San Francisco politicians.

I am personally inviting you to join us as we confront the basic challenges that will allow San Francisco to live up to its full promise and potential:

  • How do we keep our economy strong — without making our quality of life worse?

  • How do we continue to offer the kind of compassionate government every San Franciscan deserves — without making this city more expensive for middle class and working families?

  • How do we make room for the new housing our residents need so desperately — without displacing our fellow San Franciscans by pricing them out and gentrifying our neighborhoods?

  • How do we dare to dream big — while not forgetting to fill the potholes, clean our streets and parks and address the small problems of urban life that make such a big difference in our quality of life?

These are daunting challenges. But we can meet them head on — united as a family of people who share the goal of a better city.

Thank you for visiting ActLocallySF.org. Now, join the debate!

Mayor Gavin Newsom
